"Characterizing Poverty." People Poverty and Possibilities. Dec. 3 2002: 13-18. SIRS. Issues Researcher. Web 08 Oct 2011
In this article it talks about defining poverty and what it means to be poor. Income is a common way of defining poverty but poverty is defined in many ways. When people think of the poor they think of low income people with sometimes physically demanding jobs that are easily replaceable due to their lack of education. "Escaping poverty depends on improving personal capacities and increasing access to a variety of resources, institutions, and support mechanisms." Their lack of education prevents them from obtaining good health care and a better job. "Poor health and lower survival rates reduce the incentive to invest in children's education." Thus creating this endless cycle of never ending poverty. This article talks about the different factors that relate to poverty like, income, jobs, healthcare, education, and population. I plan on using this article to help myself develop a better sense of what poverty means and to develop an understanding of the key factors that causes someone to be poor. I believe this source is fairly reliable and credible. It is used by other schools as an online resource.
